What is franchising?
Franchising is a business model designed to replicate an existing business with a product and/or a service accompanied by a special or even unique concept.
In so many words, in franchising, the Franchisor offers the franchisee the franchise for replication in the franchisee's local environment. So, by using the franchisee's acquaintance with the local market and professional expertise, the Franchisor expects his/her success to reoccur in this environment.
Franchising allows you to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. You benefit from the systems and experience of an established business but have the freedom that comes with being your own boss.
In quantifiable terms, the reasons to look into Franchising are even more apparent: more than 95% of franchisees are still operating profitable businesses 5 years down the line [Source: British Franchise Association].
Franchisees usually pay an initial franchising fee consisting of a purchase of legal rights, (hence, "the license") and a start-up package, usually consisting of business and professional training.
Following the initial payment, pending on the nature of the franchise, there is an on-going process of material purchase and/or royalty transfer.
As the Franchisor supplies the franchisees with a structured way of running the business, they need not invest into building up their own method of working and can focus on supplying their customers with quality products and services.
By all standards, franchisees stand a much higher chance of success than others starting-up on their own with a non-franchised business.
